I know, I am writing of obsolete sets of printed sheets bound together into volumes, so popular in the pre-digital era…
“Book” probably comes from “Beech” (for the early Germanic practice of carving characters on beech wood tablets) while in Italian the word “libro” derives from Latin “liber”(inner bark of tree) and it’s the reason for “Library” , “Librarian”, “Libretto” etc.).
The Latin word “Papyrus” instead,it’s the origin of the English “Paper”, (and the French and German “Papier”); “Papyrus” in Greek is “Biblos” that originated the English “Bible” ( also Bibliography, Bibliomania, Bibliopegy etc.) and the Italian and Spanish “Biblioteca” (“Library”, while “Bibliotheca” in English it’s a collection of books).
That’s about it for today; I thank you for your patience and attention.
A bibliophile
Pier.
