Today, let’s analyze the most common Italian musical terms used in English:
“A cappella” (no instruments), “Aria” (a song from an opera), “Cantata” ( a piece for orchestra and singers), “Concerto” (concert), “Libretto” (a book with words of an Opera), “Opera”, “Sonata” ( a composition for instruments) etc.
VOICES
“Soprano” (upper), “Mezzo -soprano” (middle-upper), “Alto” (high), “Basso” (low) etc.
Tempo.
“Tempo” (the speed of music), “Lento (slow), “Andante” (moderately slow), “Allegro” (moderately fast), “Presto” and “Prestissimo” (very fast and ultra fast), “A tempo” (return to previous tempo) etc.
I could go on for ever but I don’t want to vex you.
Time to go now, I want to tell the conductor “Bravo Maestro , l’opera cantata a bocca chiusa in allegro, andante, ma non troppo dalla prima donna e’ un bel canto…” I know , my English is amazing..
Enjoy your 4th.
Pier il Maestro.
