“Nostalgia” comes from Greek “Nostos” (to return home) and “Algos” (pain).
In Italian it’s exactly the same word but is pronounced “Nostalgi’a”; the ending “IA” is a hiatus and it has the same sound of the monosyllable “Mia”.
The same rule applies for words like “Osteria”, “Trattoria”, etc.
So if you want to say “Mamma mia ,che nostalgia, per una buona pizzeria” (Oh my god, I feel homesick because I cannot find a good pizzeria) make sure your pronunciation is right.
Like Owens Lee Pomeroy said: “Nostalgia is like a grammar lesson: you find the present..tense, but the past…perfect.”
A domani.
Pier.
