Toast

This familiar act of proposing or of drinking in honor of somebody, has interesting origins

. The English “Toast” ( from Latin “tostare”, “To roast”) probably comes from the custom of having a spicy toasted piece of bread with drinks. In Italian “Toast” is “brindisi” of Germanic origins.

The term is the Italian version of  the German words”Bring dir’s” ( I bring it to you). For the Greeks, the act of toasting was called “philotesia” from “philotes” meaning “friendship”.

Very interesting is the origin of clinking glasses; it started  by spilling a little bit of drinks into each other glasses in order to make people comfortable about the content ( fear of being poisoned ).

That's it for today and "Salute" everybody..
